LANHAM, MD—Author, industry consultant, and founder of FIVESEED, Rosie Siemer, today announced the upcoming release of “Museum Membership Innovation: Unlocking Ideas for Audience Engagement and Sustainable Revenue.” The new book is available for immediate shipping from Rowman & Littlefield, Amazon, and Barnes&Noble.
Cultural organizations are entering an era of significant challenges. Rising operating costs, unpredictable funding sources, stagnant membership, and an increasingly competitive landscape for leisure activities indicate that these institutions have reached a critical juncture: what has worked for them in the past will not work going forward. At the same time, massive shifts in demographics and lifestyles are driving changes in consumer behavior that threaten the survival of the traditional membership business model.
"Museums are part of a much larger leisure marketplace; however, their products, marketing strategies, and internal structures do not reflect this reality. Specifically, the one-size-fits-all approach of the traditional membership model is out of step with the trends and expectations of today’s consumer," said Rosie Siemer. "My aim in writing this book is to provide an exploration of the ways in which the concept of membership is evolving in the museum space. Armed with a framework for innovation, I hope to support museums in evolving their offering to attract and retain new audiences.
Drawing from a wide range of research spanning the disciplines of behavioral economics, philanthropy, and social psychology, author and museum consultant Rosie Siemer explores the trends shaping the future of cultural organizations and offers innovative strategies designed to help them survive—and thrive—in today’s rapidly changing marketplace. Using museums as the primary subject matter of her research, Siemer analyzes the challenges and opportunities for membership as a means of engaging existing members, cultivating new audiences, and keeping museums on track for sustainable revenue.
Aidan Vega, Director of Membership at the Philadelphia Museum of Art praised Museum Membership Innovation as a "thoroughly researched and comprehensive look at the current challenges facing museum membership programs."
Siemer will be available to meet and to sign copies of the book at the American Alliance of Museums in San Francisco, May 17-20. To order, visit rowman.com.
